On the back of continuing growth in the television market worldwide, Global Lighting Technologies (GLT) is positioning itself as a valued supplier of backlighting technologies for major television manufacturers on the mainland.
GLT designs and manufactures light guide plates for the light-emitting diode (LED) television, automotive, information technology and lighting industries. Headquartered in Taiwan, GLT maintains optical design, advanced research and prototype development in the company's office in Cleveland, Ohio. The company's factories in Shanghai and Suzhou produce only for export but this will change as GLT has signed manufacturing agreements with mainland firms BOE and Washing. BOE is a major television manufacturer based in northern China and Washing is a manufacturing supplier of TCL Multimedia.
"We need to invest more as we expect demand for our products to grow by at least 20 per cent this year," says chairman Lee Mang-shiang. "We welcome manufacturing agreements with companies especially from the mainland." The share of LED televisions is expected to expand to 70 per cent of the global television market this year from only 40 per cent last year.
With the micro lens technology and its roll-to-roll (ROLL) production process, GLT caters to the backlighting needs of the likes of Sharp, Samsung, LG, Hitachi and AU Optronics.
Micro lenses can guide light to any direction, enhancing the performance of display panels. The resulting brighter images deliver product performance and energy savings unmatched by other technologies. ROLL simplifies light guide plate manufacturing into a single process and facilitates the production of larger and thinner panels at a lower cost. As products come out from a single factory, ROLL provides significant savings on transport and packaging costs.
"We are the only one in the industry that facilitates the micro lens technology and the ROLL production system, and this is the reason why our clients come to us," Lee says.
